MAHD 095: Essential Algebra
Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:
-
Solve linear equations and inequalities in one variable.
-
Solve proportions.
-
Graph linear equations in two variables by plotting points and finding intercepts.
-
Graph linear inequalities in two variables.
-
Find the slope of a line given two points, its graph, or its equation.
-
Simplify expressions with integer exponents using the product, quotient, and power rules.
-
Add, subtract, multiply, and divide polynomials with one or more variables.
-
Simplify square roots.
-
Solve quadratic equations.
-
Determine an equation of a line given two points or a point and slope.
-
Solve systems of linear equations in two variables by graphing, substitution, and elimination.
-
Graph parabolas by finding the vertex and axis of symmetry and plotting points.
-
Recognize vocabulary used in the course.
-
Apply the concepts learned in the course to solve application problems.
Critical reading and writing skills will be emphasized in this course. Reading and writing exercises will be assigned with each section. Students will be required to express the solutions to their algebraic manipulations in complete, coherent sentences.
