Apply to Become an NKU SI Leader

Information for Prospective Supplemental Instruction Leaders

What does the Leader get out of SI and SLA?
SI and SLA leaders are paid each semester, guaranteed. Other benefits include having a second chance to take a basic course and deepen your understanding of the course concepts without paying or taking exams. You eliminate travel time between school and work. You learn and apply leadership skills that will serve you well in any field or career you choose to enter. You feel great because you help fellow students succeed by sharing your knowledge, study strategies, and time. You model the behaviors of a successful student! This is your chance to give something back to your university community in the form of service.

How do I learn how to lead SI and SLA sessions?
You will receive two days of training prior to your beginning a leader. You will be supervised by a professional staff member who has been trained as a supervisor. The supervisor will attend classes with you the first two weeks of the semester and will help you plan your study sessions. Your supervisor will also sit  in on your study sessions and offer feedback until you both agree that you can do them on your own. You also will be asked to sign up for LAP 201 which is a one credit course in tutoring specifically for SI and SLA leaders. This course is the program’s way of providing you with on-going training and opportunities to meet with other leaders for group problem solving and sharing successful session strategies.

How much time must I allow in my schedule for being a SI or SLA leader?
The expectation is that you will work approximately ten hours per week as a leader. The time breaks down as follows:

  • Attend Class three hours
  • Lead study review sessions three to four hours
  • Work with supervisor and/or SI faculty one hour
  • Participate in LAP 201 for one hour
  • Preparation for SI/SLA sessions one to two hours

If you would like to be considered as a SI or SLA leader in the Supplemental Instruction or Structured Learning Assistance Programs, please fill out the SI application and return it to FH 207.
